History of Robert August Surfboards
He is famously recognized as one of the lead surfers in the movie, The Endless Summer, alongside Mike Hynson.
Prior to surfing around the world, Robert grew up surfing at Redondo Beach and he was exposed to the surf culture early on, since his father was well recognized in the community for setting up good beach parties.
After high school, he went off to the best places around the world to surf and shoot the movie The Endless Summer. During those years, he would develop a close relationship with the movie director and with his surf partner Mike Hynson.
Returning from the trip, he completed one year of dentistry at Long Beach State University. He was initially going to pursue a career as a dentist. Fortunately, the one dentist he had a conversation with convinced him out of the practice, and instead, encouraged Robert to pursue his shaping career.
Robert shaped for many other surfboard labels in the 1960′s, however, the emergence of shortboards as the choice of board, edged out the longboard to almost non-existence throughout the 1970′s. He would open up a short-lived restaurant in 1971 to only hate the business and finally, launch his own surfboard label in 1974 at Huntington Beach, CA.
Although Robert was disappointed by the lack of interest in longboards that made his journey around the world so exquisite in “The Endless Summer” years, the 1990′s showed an interest in re-introduction of longboards. He would then make a cameo appearance in the second Endless Summer installment in 1994, and spend his time between his California and Costa Rica homes with his family.
Overview of Robert August Surfboards
The latest Robert August Surf Shop was in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, but has now been closed down and replaced by a surf hostel called Blue Trailz Hostel.
The Robert August Surf Company still operates out of California, and you will still see many Robert August boards being surfed in the Tamarindo area as Robert August still resides in his vacation home there.
Robert August is known for his classic longboard models, reminiscent of the times he longboarded in the 1950′s to 1960′s. Although he has some “shortboards”, those were fillers during the time shortboards emerged over the longboards.
